Restore failed in Windows 7: "cannot find the file specified 0x80070002"
After a harddisk failure I had to install windows 7 from scratch. Now I am trying to run: Control Panel\System and Security\Backup and Restore to recover my user data, but when I select the backup location and try to recover I get: "Windwos was not able to load the selected backup for the following reason: The system cannot find the file specified (0x80070002). Verify that this location is valid and try again, or consider using a different backup" How can I solve this issue? Cheers, Henk

Hi Henk, you can try the following steps first: 1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow. 2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER: sfc /scannow The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions. For further information, visit the below mentioned link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833 You can also check the solution in the following thread: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7performance/thread/61247388-87bb-4bda-9211-7bb96ffb0fdc Hope this helps! Hi Sean Zhu, Thanks for your response. I followed your suggestion. However sfc did not show any problem. So no solution yet. The thread you mentiond shows the same problem, exept that I try the restore. But it looks like the program bails out straight away at the first attempt. What else? Henk

Hi Henk, thanks for the update. Have you tried the following steps in that thread? a. Do you have any other third-party backup or system maintenance application installed on your computer? If yes, please uninstall the same temporarily and try performing a backup and check if that helps in backing up successfully without any errors. Firstly, make sure the Volume Shadow Copy service is running and the startup type of the same is set to Automatic. 1. Click Start, type services.msc in the Start search box and hit Enter. 2. Locate Volume Shadow Copy. Check for the status. If the service is stopped, right-click and select Restart. Also make sure the startup type is set to Automatic under Properties > General > Startup type. Additionally, you may also try performing a backup by putting the computer in a clean boot state. To help troubleshoot error messages and other issues, you can start Windows 7 by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts. Putting your system in clean boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue. If yes, you may have to contact the program manufacturer for any updates or uninstall and re-install the program. Refer the following Microsoft KB article for more information on how to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7: How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 Note: After troubleshooting, make sure to put the computer to start as usual as mentioned in Step 7 in the above KB article.Sean Zhu - MSFT

Hello Sean Zhu, My real problem is that I cannot restore from a previously made backup. I installed Windows 7 (64bit) from scratch, and want to restore from the old backup (also made with windows 7). The restore program can find the backup at my external USB drive, and with my privileged command prompt I can drill into it and see all the files. But it throws the above error when I choose to restore. When I run a new backup at my newly build system, it works okay and I can restore this fresh backup as well. So the Backup program and the services looks alright. But how to retrieve my old backup remains my burning issue.... Best regards, Henk

Thanks for your reply Sean Zhu, I tried your suggestion and made my external drive a network share from which I can select my backup (with full RW access): \\<server>\backup But unfortunately the same result as I my first report. Henk

Hi Henk, please try the following steps this time: 1. Temporarily disable any installed security program.2. Make sure the Volume Shadow Copy service is running and the startup type of the same is set to Automatic.3. Check the dulpicate profiles from the registry editor: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS NT\CURRENTVERSION\PROFILELIST If you found the duplicate profiles, please export the entry and then delete it. Then, please restart the computer and check the result.Sean Zhu - MSFT

I had to use a repair (or is it 'recovery'?) disc to get W7 to use my backup system image. W7 prompted me to create the disc when I first started using the OS. You should be able to create one if you don't have one already and then boot from the CD/DVD. If I understand your intentions correctly, it should give you the option to recover from your system image.

The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002) This problem is due to one or more profiles under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList with missing ProfileImagePath. To check whether you have missing profiles: 1. Open regedit, navigate to the above registry key. (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList). Expand the list 2. Click on each of the profiles listed. The first 3 profiles should have ProfileImagePath value of %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\SystemProfile, %SystemRoot%\ServiceProfiles\LocalService, and %SystemRoot%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService respectively. 3. Starting from the 4th profile, the ProfileImagePath should contain path to the user profiles on your machine, such as C:\users\Christine 4. If one or more of the profile has no profile image, then you have missing profiles. To work around this, delete the profile in question (Caution: The registry contains critical settings that are necessary for your system to function properly. Take extra caution while making changes) 1. First, export the ProfileList key for safekeeping. (Right click on the key, choose “Export”, and save it to the desktop.) 2. Right click on the profile in question, choose delete. 3. Try backup again. For More Information and help related to windows 7 backup error go here
